General Questions

What does Matheon mean?
"Matheon" does not mean anything. It is a creation of Töchter+Söhne, a student run spin-off company of the Universität der Künste in Berlin, we had asked for creative input. The original full name (DFG Reserach Center "Mathematics for key technologies: Modelling, simulation, and optimization of real-world processes") was a "monster", and it turned out that nobody really used it. Whenever an article about our center was published, the name of our center was altered in an arbitrary way or dropped at all. The abbreviation FZT 86 sounds more like a name for database or a bookkeeper. So we had to look for a "better" name for our DFG Research Center. Finally, we found the name Matheon . One can find various interpretations (you can view it as mathe-on, i.e., switching on mathematics, or one can employ the similarity to pantheon), but it is just an artificial name.

Why do cooperate five different institutions within Matheon?
Before the formation of the Research Center Matheon, an initiative called "Berzam" did already exist which coordinated the mathematical research at the five different institutions. In this respect, the Research Center Matheon is the consequent continuation of Berzam. Only thanks to the close cooperation between the five institutes it is possible to work on the highly complex problems, which are essential for the key technologies of our society, with mandatory intensity and competence.
