| International Workshop on Phase Separation, Damage and Fracture | 21.09.2011 - 23.09.2011 | Phase separation processes, damage phenomena and crack propagation occur in many materials and devices. The knowledge and modeling of the mechanisms inducing these phenomena is of great importance for technological applications. Damage phenomena are caused by different physical processes and take place on different length scales. The description of these processes leads to highly nonlinear, non-smooth, coupled evolutionary systems. There are various challenges concerning the modeling, the analysis and the numerical simulation of such systems. | Link | contact

| Mini-symposium "Vibrations with unilateral constraints" | 22.07.2011 | Vibrations can not be avoided in mechanical systems: they create
noise with considerable nuisance for users and also untimely wear.
A mathematical study of these phenomena is therefore crucial to
predict them efficiently and to take them into account in the
design of structures. This topic is intensively investigated for
nearly 30 years with considerable progress in the case of deformable
bodies as well as for discrete mechanical systems. This mini-symposium
aims to give a review of current research and also to make a tribute
to Michelle Schatzman's (8/12/1949-20/08/2010) contributions to this field. | none | contact

| Phase Transitions and Optimal Control | 23.10.2008 - 25.10.2008 | The workshop focused on three main research areas: Phase transitions,
optimal control, and hysteresis. The word ``hysteresis'' is usually
attributed to processes that exhibit a rate independent memory.
The physical reason for rate independence relies on structure changes
in a hidden microstructure, which are much faster than the observer's
time scale. Phase transitions offer a typical example of such a
behavior. | Link | contact

| Link | contact

| Multiscale problems in three Applications | 29.05.2007 - 01.06.2007 | Within the focus of the workshop are three categories of multiscale problems with simultaneous scalings of time, space and further quantities that are characteristic for the case at hand: Discrete lattice models and their continuum limits, Discrete and continuum descriptions of nucleation and subsequent evolutions and Sharp interface limits of phase field systems.
Discrete lattice models serve as prototypes to study various possible limiting cases where a discrete ODE system can be substituted by a single or at least a few PDEs that describe the discrete dynamics on a continuum level.
During the first stages of a phase transition small clusters of the new phase with α particles may grow or shrink by adding or subtracting a single particle. The evolution of the number of clusters is described by an ODE system of Becker-Döring type, which, however, should be substituted by a PDE if clusters above a certain size appear.
Phase field systems resolve the interfacial region so that their evolution may be described by smooth fields. On the scale of microscopic observations the interfacial region mostly appears as a singular surface, where the observable fields change discontinuously. Thus the physical relevance of phase field systems is tested by their sharp interface limits. | Link | contact

| File
